India is a land of rich weaves and textiles. It is estimated that about 95% of the world’s handwoven fabrics are made in India. In India, where every region has its own special kind of weave and textile, one state stands out for its beauty. The state of Tamil Nadu produces exquisite handwoven cotton sarees and Madras check fabrics that are prized for their natural feel and stunning look.
The history behind the sarees
Chettinad cotton sarees are beautiful sarees are woven by the Devanga Chettiyars of Chettinad in Tamil Nadu. They inherit their patterns and intricacies from the heavy silk “kandaangi” sarees that are traditional to Tamil Nadu. Chettinad cotton sarees are however still referred to as kandaangi sarees.
Crafted in cotton
Chettinad cotton sarees use heavy cotton to create beautiful pieces of handloom textiles. The natural fabric and the flow of the saree makes it the perfect garment for tropical weather. These cotton sarees are then enhanced with exquisite zari borders to give them a rich, regal look.
Handwoven with care
What makes Chettinad cotton sarees special is the technique used to make them. The warp and the weft yarns are woven together by hand using a loom – known as thari. The process is a slow and painstaking one, and it ensures that each saree is unique and distinct. Unlike mass-manufactured textiles, every Chettinad cotton saree is different, and each saree is handwoven with care and love. This means, when you drape it on, you’re not just wearing a saree, you’re wearing a garment steeped in tradition and loving hard work.
A varied colour palette
For our Tamil Tales collection, we have used an extensive colour palette. From earthy tones like beige and brown to rich colours like red and maroon, there’s something in this collection to suit everyone’s tastes. Cool greens and blues co-exist with fiery reds and cheerful yellows in this collection. Contrasting borders with intricate motifs typical of Chettinad sarees grace every piece of this collection.
Striped and checked
Chettinad cotton sarees are well known for their bold stripes and checks as well as their unique colour combinations. In this collection, this trait is apparent. These brightly coloured sarees are sometimes colourblocked by a band of a different colour, sometimes feature a pattern of checks. The result is a gorgeous collection which uses all the colours of the palette to its utmost advantage.
Another component used in our Tamil Tales collection is that of Madras checked fabrics. Typical of the state of Tamil Nadu, the Madras fabric is lightweight cotton characterized by a plaid design. Sarees handcrafted from the Madras check fabric are not just elegant to look at but also soft to touch.
