Cotton Kurtas, Palazzos, Cape with Applique Work - Tjori

The art of applique and patchwork is an ancient one, practiced in various forms all over the world. In India, applique work is done mainly by the skilled artisans of Rajasthan, and it is from these skilled artisans that we have sourced the exquisite fabrics for our latest collection. Barmer Applique, our latest collection, is an homage to the beautiful art of applique patchwork.

Applique work

The word applique comes from the French word appliqué which means work laid or applied on another material. Like the defintion suggests, applique cut work is done by stitching pieces of fabric on top of a base material. It is very similar to patchwork, where smaller bits of fabric are sown together to create a bigger one.

Applique in India

In India, applique work is a popular and traditional art, practiced all over the country, where each region has its own definite style and voice. This art is most widely practiced in Rajasthan. This traditional art, also called asone, is known for creating beautiful textiles. A base material is adorned with cut fabrics - usually in a geometric pattern - to create elaborate designs. For our collection, we have sourced gorgeous applique fabrics from Barmer in Rajasthan to create beautifully traditional kurtas, palazzos and contemporary dresses.

Handcrafted and sustainable

Applique work is popular not only for its beauty - which is undeniable - but also the lesser waste philosophy behind it, something we stand firmly by at Tjori. For applique work, leftover scraps of fabric are often utilised beautifully to create something new and different. Old clothes are also reused to make gorgeous applique textiles. Similarly, patchworking is a great technique to repair damaged clothes and give them a new lease of life. This ensures that lesser waste is generated, making thi craft an example of sustainable and environment friendly fashion.

Crafted in cotton

Cotton is a fabric that lends itself beautifully to Indian weather and aesthetics. Breathable and natural, it is the perfect fabric for Indian summers. For our latest collection, we have used premium cotton fabrics to create lovely pieces. Handcrafted by the skilled artisans of Barmer, these cutwork cotton fabrics are soft on the skin and beautiful to look at too. The pieces in this collection, therefore, are ones to keep for generations to come!

Soft colours

For this collection, we have used elegant colours like white, mint green, peach and pale grey to design beautiful kurtas, palazzos and dresses. Cutwork patches of the same colour are placed on a base fabric and painstakingly stitched to create elaborate motifs in a tasteful look.

The most common and widely used applique motif of the four petal flower - a geometric design with teardrop shaped pieces of fabric - has been extensively used in this collection.

So go ahead and shop from this beautiful collection today to add some traditional, handcrafted pieces to your wardrobe.
