The Story of Beads in India.

India is a country with a rich and varied tradition of jewellery-making. From the regal jewels of the Rajasthani Rajwadas to the temple jewellery of the southern states, every region of this country echoes with its own unique style of jewellery. One such popular jewellerydesigning method in India, which dates as far back as the Indus Valley civilization, is the use of beads to create exquisite necklaces, bracelets, earrings, payals and more.

During the Indus Valley civilization, women wore jewellery made from carnelian, lapis lazuli and terracotta beads. Today, beads can be made with gemstones, glass, semi-precious stones, precious metals like gold and silver and much more. These beads are then strung onto metal chains or threads to create jewellery. India still remains one of the largest producers of beads in the world.

The dholki beads of Rajasthan

The dholki beads are so named after the Hindi word for the traditional South Asian hand drum. These beads have a distinctive rounded shape, which sets them apart from the conventional spherical beads we see most often in jewellery. Dholki beads are typical of Rajasthani jewellery.

Traditionally, dholki beads are handcrafted out of gold or silver and filled with wax. Because of this, they are susceptible to denting and chipping – but their beauty lies in their imperfections.

These stunning dholki beads were then used to create gorgeous necklaces – often with double or triple strands – that sometimes came with matching earrings. These necklaces were charming in their simplicity, as traditionally, only a black silk cord was used to string the beads together and then worn around the neck.

Tjori’s collection of dholki-inspired beauties

At Tjori, we decided to create a collection that took on the best of both worlds – the beauty of traditional dholki beads with the peppy feel of modern, colourful jewellery. And so this Beaded Beauties collection was born.

This range uses dholki-shaped beads that have been expertly crafted out of German silver and polished a bright golden, making them more resistant to denting while retaining all the beauty of the original, wax-filled ones. These beads are then strung onto cheerful and bright cotton threads to create pretty necklaces, bracelets, anklets and more.

The cords used in this collection range from the traditional black to stunning aquamarine and cheerful yellow. Certain pieces use multi-coloured threads along with dholki-shaped beads to create jewellery that is truly stunning. So shop from this beautiful and fun collection today before it gets sold out!
