Ajrakh, according to local artisans, Ajrakh means "keep it today"- referring to the patience and concentration required for the 16 crucial step manufacturing process of Ajrakh textiles. Drawing in from Ajrakhpur’s arabic history, Azrakh- the arabic word for Indigo reflects the natural colours that were used in these textiles before the tragic earthquake of 1956 which swept away most of the Indigo plant in the district. Ajrakhi printing blocks draw inspiration from the Islamic architectural arches and jali windows. Each block has an intricately sculpted motif which narrates the rich culture of Kuchchh. The pastel hues and dark tones of blue are the original shades that were used in this art form.
