Kashmiri Phiran Guide 2026: Aari vs Cashmilon, How to Wear One, and What Free Size Means

A phiran is a long, loose, long-sleeved over-garment worn in Kashmir from November to March, traditionally over a kangri (a small fire pot) held against the stomach. It has become the winter kurta of Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow and Jaipur because it does what a shawl does without needing hands to hold it. This guide covers the two types we make, how they fit, and how to wear them.

Aari embroidered phirans

Aari is Kashmir's hooked-needle chain stitch, worked in dense paisleys and vines across the yoke, cuffs and hem. On a wool-blend phiran it is the festive version: maroon, black, teal and navy with tonal or contrast embroidery. It is the phiran for weddings, Eid, Christmas and winter family functions. Dry clean only; store folded in cloth. See aari embroidered phirans.

Cashmilon phirans

Cashmilon is the soft acrylic-wool blend that Kashmir itself uses for everyday phirans. It is warm, light, machine washable and a fraction of the price of pure wool, and it takes colour well — which is why our cashmilon phirans come in sage, emerald, mustard, rani pink, wine, teal, olive and more, finished with hand-embroidered Kutch lace at the neck and cuffs. These are the ones to wear daily from November to February, with the matching straight pants or over leggings.

How warm is a phiran?

A cashmilon phiran on its own is right for 10–20°C daytime — Delhi and Lucknow winter days, Jaipur evenings. Below 10°C, wear a thermal or a fine knit underneath; the loose cut leaves room. Wool-blend aari phirans are a step warmer. Neither replaces a jacket in Shimla or Srinagar in January.

What "free size" means

Phirans are cut wide and straight from the shoulder, so one size fits roughly S through XXL — a chest of about 34 to 46 inches. The garment width (flat, armpit to armpit) is listed on each product page; double it and compare with your chest measurement plus 4–6 inches of ease. If your chest is over 46 inches, look at the widest listed phirans or write to support@tjori.com before ordering. Length is usually 42–46 inches, calf length on most heights.

How to wear it outside Kashmir

With straight pants and flats for office; over leggings or a churidar with juttis for a festive day; belted at the waist as a dress with boots for a dinner. A phiran over a thin kurta is the Kashmiri way and the warmest. Jewellery: oxidised silver with cashmilon, gold-toned jhumkas with aari work.

Care

Cashmilon: gentle machine cycle, cold water, dry flat, no wringing; it does not shrink like wool. Aari: dry clean, and store with a cedar block, not naphthalene, which yellows embroidery thread.

Phiran sets

If you want the complete look, phiran sets pair the phiran with matching cashmilon pants. See all phirans, or the Hindi page: फिरन.
