Kids Ethnic Wear Size Guide by Age: 0–3 Months to 10 Years, in cm
Children’s clothes are sold by age, but a tall two-year-old and a small three-year-old can wear the same size. The age label is a starting point; the chest measurement is the decision. Here are the measurements behind Tjori’s kids’ sizes and a simple way to choose.

How to measure a child
Chest: around the fullest part, under the arms, tape flat. Shoulder: bone to bone across the back. Do it over a vest, with the child standing (or lying flat for a baby). Compare the chest to the table; if it sits between two sizes, take the larger.
When to size up
- Always for a baby near the top of an age range – they will be in the next size within weeks.
- For festive outfits bought more than a month ahead.
- For cotton and malmul, which shrink slightly on the first wash and do not stretch.
- For a Nehru jacket that will be layered over a kurta – buy the jacket in the same age size as the kurta, not smaller.
Fabrics by age
Newborn to 12 months: mulmul (cotton muslin) and bamboo – lightest, softest, quickest to dry. Wrap-front angrakhas and kurtas that open flat make dressing easier. 1 to 5 years: cotton and cotton slub for daily wear, malmul for summer; elastic waists on everything. 5 to 10 years: cotton kurta pyjamas, Kalamkari jackets, shirt-and-shorts sets – the same crafts as the adult range in child sizes.

The larger. Cotton does not stretch, and a slightly long kurta looks intentional; a tight one does not.
