Kashmiri Phirans for Women – Hand Aari Embroidery, Free Size

Twenty-three phirans – the long, loose Kashmiri winter tunic – hand-embroidered in aari (hook) work by artisans in Kashmir: teal blue, olive brown, olive green, burnt orange and mustard phirans with multi-tone or pink-and-gold aari borders at ₹2,999, and all-over embroidered phirans in sage green, blue paisley and midnight at ₹4,499. All free size – one wide cut that fits most bodies.

Which phiran

  • Border-embroidered phirans – aari work at the neck, cuffs and hem on a solid body; teal, olive, burnt orange, mustard, ₹2,999. Daily winter wear.
  • All-over embroidered phirans – sage green, blue with paisleys, midnight; dense aari across the whole body, ₹4,499. Weddings and winter festivals.
  • Velvet and gota phirans – see Velvet and Kaftans.

About the phiran

The phiran is Kashmir’s winter garment – knee-length or longer, loose enough to layer over a sweater, traditionally worn with a kangri (fire-pot) underneath. Aari embroidery is worked with a hooked needle in chain stitch, the same craft as on Kashmiri shawls and the aari woollen long jacket. Wear over a slip or fitted top with straight pants and juttis; add Kashmiri Heritage jewellery.

Care

Dry clean only; store folded with the embroidery inward, away from moisture.
