How to Style a Kurta: 7 Bottoms That Work, from Palazzos to Jeans

People buy kurtas and then wear them with the one palazzo they own. The kurta is rarely the problem; the bottom is. Below are seven bottoms, what each does to the silhouette, and which kurta cut it needs. Everything linked is made to order from XS to XXXL.

1. Palazzo

The wide-leg palazzo adds volume below, so it balances a straight or A-line kurta and overwhelms a flared one. It is the most comfortable option and the most festive with a dupatta. Keep the kurta at hip or mid-thigh length so the palazzo shows. See cotton palazzos, printed palazzos, or buy them matched as kurta palazzo sets.

2. Straight pants

Straight or slightly tapered cotton pants give the cleanest line and read as office wear. They work under every kurta length, including long. A white or white straight pant goes with every kurta you own; see kurta pant sets for matched pairs.

3. Churidar

Gathered at the ankle and fitted through the leg, the churidar is the traditional partner for flared and anarkali kurtas — the fitted leg lets the flare do the work. Avoid it under a straight kurta unless the kurta is very long.

4. Dhoti pants

Draped at the hip, tapered at the ankle, ready-stitched with an elastic waist: dhoti pants are the contemporary option. They need a short kurta or a crop top; a long kurta hides the drape that is the point.

5. Skirt

A long cotton skirt or a tiered skirt under a short kurta is the festive-casual look that works for garba, holidays and brunch. Keep one of the two plain.

6. Culottes

Wide and cropped at the calf, culottes sit between palazzo and pant. They suit short and hip-length kurtas and show your footwear — wear them with Kolhapuri flats or juttis.

7. Jeans

A short cotton kurta or kurti over straight or wide-leg jeans is the college and weekend uniform for a reason. Pick striped or printed short kurtas; keep the jeans plain.

The quick rule

Volume on top, slim below; slim on top, volume below. Straight kurta + palazzo. Flared kurta + churidar. Short kurta + anything. If in doubt, a plain white or black bottom and a printed kurta cannot go wrong.

Sizing the bottom

Palazzos, pants and dhoti pants here have full elastic waists, so one size fits a range of waists; the length is what to check — most are cut for 5'3" to 5'7" with flats, and the exact length is on each product. If you buy a set and want the bottom in a different size, email support@tjori.com after ordering and we adjust it before stitching. Size chart in English and Hindi.
