Plus-Size Kurtas and Dresses: How to Choose the Right Fit in XL, XXL and XXXL

Tjori cuts every women’s style in seven sizes, XS to XXXL, on the same pattern – XXXL is graded up from the block, not a separate “plus” range with different styles. That means the choice at larger sizes is about cut and fabric, not about what is available. Here is how to get it right.

The measurements

Size Chest / bust Waist Hip Shoulder UK / US / EU (approx.)
XL 106.6 cm / 42" 101.6 cm / 40" 111.7 cm / 44" 40.6 cm 16 / 12 / 44
XXL 111.7 cm / 44" 106.6 cm / 42" 116.8 cm / 46" 41.9 cm 18 / 14 / 46
XXXL 116.8 cm / 46" 111.7 cm / 44" 121.9 cm / 48" 43.1 cm 20 / 16 / 48

These are garment measurements from the Tjori size chart. Measure yourself with a soft tape, snug not tight, over the underwear you will wear, and compare. If you are between two sizes, take the larger – our cottons have little or no stretch.

Is size 18 XXL or XXXL?

The most-asked question we get. It depends on whose size 18. A UK 18 (bust about 104–107 cm) is a Tjori XL to XXL. A UK 20 (112–117 cm) is an XXXL. A US 18 is larger than a UK 18 and is roughly Tjori XXXL. Many international brands label a UK 18–20 as “XXXXL” or “4XL”, which is why the same body can be an XXL here and a 4XL elsewhere. Ignore the letters and match centimetres.

Which cuts fit best

  • A-line and flared kurtas skim from the bust and never pull at the hip. The most forgiving cut at every size. Kurtas & Kurtis.
  • Anarkali and kalidar kurtas fit at the bust and flare from the ribs – good for a fuller midsection.
  • Gathered, tiered and wrap dresses adjust at the waist; halter-neck flares work if you are narrower at the shoulder than the hip. Cotton Dresses.
  • Elastic and drawstring bottoms – palazzos, culottes, dhoti pants – size by hip and forget the waist. Palazzos & Pants.
  • Kurta sets come with both pieces in one size, and the bottoms are elasticated. Kurta Sets.
  • Kaftans and free-size pieces suit most bodies but check garment width if you are XXXL. Kaftans.

Fitted styles – bustier tops, straight-cut pants with a fixed waistband, readymade blouses – need the tape measure. Blouses are stitched to size; a tailor can let out the side seams slightly.

Which fabrics

Cotton slub and khadi have body and hold their shape without clinging. Mulmul and Kota are light and sheer and drape close, so they show more – wear them over a slip or choose them in relaxed cuts. Cambric takes prints crisply and sits between the two. All are breathable, which matters more than anything else in Indian heat.

Length and proportion

Our models are 5’8” and wear size S, so photographs run long on shorter frames. Garment length is on every product page under Specifications; a kurta that sits mid-thigh on the model may sit at the knee on you, which is often better. Straight kurtas to the knee with a slim pant lengthen the line; anarkalis and long flares to mid-calf balance a fuller top half.

Sizing checklist

  1. Measure bust, waist and hip in cm.
  2. Match the bust for tops and dresses, the hip for bottoms and skirts.
  3. Between sizes? Go up.
  4. Check garment length on the product page.
  5. Cotton shrinks a little – wash cold, and size up if you are close to the line.

FAQs

Do all styles come in XXXL?

Nearly all women’s apparel does; a few free-size and fitted styles list their own range. Filter any collection by size, or browse XXXL, XXL and XL directly.

Do you make anything above XXXL?

Not as a standard size. If your measurements are just above XXXL, the relaxed cuts – kaftans, A-line flares, drawstring palazzos – usually fit; check garment width on the product page.

Can I exchange for a different size?

Yes, unused with tags within the return window – see the returns policy.
