Wedding Guest Outfits for Winter 2026–27: What to Wear to a Mehendi, Haldi, Sangeet, Wedding and Reception
Wedding season 2026–27 opens after Dev Uthani Ekadashi in the third week of November and runs through February, with the heaviest dates in late November, early December and again in late January. As a guest you are dressing for four or five functions over two or three days, in a north-Indian winter that is warm at noon and near 8°C by the time the baraat arrives. Here is what to wear for each function, what to layer over it, and what to pack, with pieces from Tjori’s Festive Collection.
Mehendi – daytime, colour, sitting still
Greens, yellows and marigold orange, and an outfit you can sit in for two hours while the mehendi dries. A block-print co-ord set or a pleated cotton maxi skirt with a chintz blouse; sleeves that push up past the elbow, nothing that trails over your hands. Floral or gota jewellery, flat Kolhapuris. If it is outdoors in December, a quilted or Kota cape over the top.
Haldi – yellow, and something you do not mind staining
Turmeric stains cotton permanently, so the haldi outfit is the cheapest one you own or something already yellow. A yellow Kota Doria kurta over white palazzos, or a yellow cotton kaftan – the kaftan is the one silhouette that looks intentional with sleeves rolled and hem hitched. No leather footwear: fabric juttis or bare feet. Jewellery: thread anklets and a flower or bead tikka.
Sangeet – the evening you dance
The dressiest evening for most guests, and the coldest – sangeets run past midnight in December. The rule is swing and layer: a cotton-silk Kalamkari dress or a flared Ikkat dress with brocade block heels, a lurex-stripe cotton-silk jumpsuit for anyone who will not manage a dupatta on a dance floor, or a brocade angrakha kurta with black straight pants. Over it, a velvet or brocade jacket that comes off for the dance and goes back on for dinner. Kundan choker, brocade potli.
The wedding – the baraat, the pheras, the late night
The pheras can run to 2 am in a December garden. Reds, maroons, wine and deep greens read right in the mandap photographs; leave red-on-red to the bride. Two routes:
- The saree: a Ari-embroidered georgette or cotton-silk saree with a readymade blouse – no tailor in wedding season – and a Pashmina or woollen shawl for after sunset, which is the layer every north-Indian wedding guest ends up borrowing.
- The set: a three-piece Kalamkari or brocade kurta set with a long quilted jacket or an embroidered Kashmiri phiran over it – warmer than a shawl and hands stay free for the plate.
Footwear for standing on cold marble for four hours: brocade wedges or embroidered juttis over stilettos. Jewellery is the heaviest of the week – a kundan or pearl necklace set, maang tikka, bangles.
Reception – indoors, seated, photographed
Usually a hotel hall, so the layer comes off. A satin blouse and dhoti co-ord, a silk or cotton-silk dress with gold-tone layered chains, or the sangeet dress in a different jacket if you are travelling light. Brocade mules.
Layering for a north-Indian winter wedding
Delhi, Jaipur, Chandigarh and Lucknow weddings in December and January sit between 6°C and 12°C after 8 pm. The pieces that solve it without hiding the outfit: an embroidered phiran (worn as a coat, not a dress), a long quilted cotton jacket in a print that matches the kurta, a Pashmina or Kani shawl, and a velvet cape for the sangeet. Wear the layer in the photographs too – the ones without it are the ones where you look cold.
Sizes and fit

Packing for a three-day wedding
Five outfits, two pairs of footwear (one flat, one heel), one shawl, one jacket, and jewellery in one metal so everything mixes. Cotton and cotton-silk pack flat and steam out in the hotel bathroom; brocade and velvet go on top.
