Navratri 2026 Outfit Ideas: What to Wear for Nine Nights of Garba, Puja and Dussehra
Sharad Navratri 2026 begins on Sunday 11 October and runs nine nights to Monday 19 October, with Vijayadashami (Dussehra) on Tuesday 20 October – about three weeks before Diwali this year. Nine evenings of garba and dandiya, morning pujas, an Ashtami kanya bhoj and a Dussehra lunch is a lot of outfit, and the pieces that get through it are flared cotton, flat footwear and jewellery that does not swing into your face. The nine colours – and how to do them without nine outfits
Each day of Navratri has a colour – white, red, royal blue, yellow, green, grey, orange, peacock green and pink across the nine – and the order changes each year with the weekday the festival starts on, so check the day’s colour on the morning. You do not need nine new outfits. Three flared silhouettes in neutral prints and a set of coloured dupattas and jewellery covers the lot:
- Red / orange / pink days: a red Ajrakh flared kurta or a rust Kalamkari gathered dress; the pink day is a Kota dupatta over off-white.
- White / grey days: an off-white embroidered cotton kurta with oxidised Afghani earrings – silver reads as grey.
- Green / peacock green / blue days: a sage or mehendi green cotton dress, a blue block-print kurta, or an Ikkat dress that carries both.
- Yellow day: a yellow Kota Doria kurta – also the colour for Ashtami’s kanya bhoj in many homes.
Garba and dandiya nights – what actually works
You will be on your feet for three hours in a crowd. The rules: a hem that flares when you turn, a waist that stays put, sleeves or straps that do not slip, and nothing that catches a dandiya stick.
- The flared dress: a tiered or gathered cotton maxi is the easiest garba outfit there is – it twirls, it breathes, and there is no dupatta to manage. Pin a light dupatta across the body if the venue is traditional.
- The skirt: a pleated cotton maxi skirt with a fitted Ajrakh or chintz blouse is the closest thing to a chaniya choli in everyday cotton, and gets worn again after the festival.
- The kurta: an anarkali or flared kurta over churidar or straight pants for anyone who wants coverage and swing at once.
Footwear is the decision that decides the night. Flat Kolhapuris or cushioned juttis, broken in before the first night; leave the heels for Dussehra. Jewellery: oxidised chokers that sit close to the neck, studs or small jhumkas rather than long danglers, ghungroo anklets that you will hear when you turn. Carry a potli on a long cord so both hands stay free.
Morning pujas and Ashtami kanya bhoj
Daytime and at home, so lighter and easier to sit down in. A cotton kurta set with dupatta in the day’s colour, or a hand-block printed straight kurta with palazzos. For Ashtami and Navami, when nine girls are fed at home, choose something that survives kheer and halwa – a printed cotton rather than a plain pale one.
Dussehra – Tuesday 20 October
The one day to dress up properly, usually a family lunch or an evening at the Ravan dahan. A cotton-linen saree with a readymade blouse, or a cotton-silk Kalamkari dress with brocade block heels and a kundan choker. If the evening is outdoors, add a Kota cape – late October evenings turn cool in the north.
